Episode 18: The Enochian Angels of John Dee and Edward KelleyIn his day, John Dee was famous for his contributions to science and for his role as adviser to Queen Elizabeth. Dee assembled the largest library England had ever seen and his mansion at Mortlake outside London was a popular place to visit for foreign emissaries and prominent thinkers.
But Dee harbored a longing for more knowledge than science could offer. He wanted to know about the world and what lies beyond it. Dissatisfied with the limitations of contemporary wisdom, he turned to the spirit world for guidance. What he found was going to influence the Western Mystery tradition forever.
In 1581 Dee contacts the angels for the first time. He soon has to accept that he is not a talented medium. Enter Edward Kelley, a much younger man of low social background and a nasty habit of necromancy. Kelley is excellent with the crystal ball and the two start a collaboration that will take them through countless angelic worlds. Parallel to their spiritual vision quests, Dee and Kelley sojourned through the European courts entertaining kings and emperors with their seances and alchemical experiments.

Another excellent show, guys. Just thought I'd post a link to the latest issue of The Journal of the Western Mystery Tradition, which contains two interesting articles, one on the origin of the Angelic alphabet, and one on the various revisions of the Great Table.

I listened to the Enochian episode tonight while I went for a walk. I was captivated for the entire hour. I love the way you two use a kind of dialogue style of exposition. I felt like I learned so much and Dee was always an enigmatic figure and now I feel like I have a much better understanding. Really great work.

I found interesting that many bible's personage were tempted or at least tested during the course of their spiritual journeys just like these two personage. Master Jesus in the desert, Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden, Abraham with his only son, etc... I think that the Angel or spirit that spoken to them and suggested to switch women was just testing them and to how advanced they were in that path, and what they were ready to do in order to acquire that knowledge. Unfortunately, it appears to me that they failed to recognized it, like in the story of the tour of Babel, it created confusion among them so they could not continue their work, and could not get more of that great knowledge. What do you think?

(I noticed you are already friends with Lon Milo DuQuette on Facebook)but for others, I just wanted to say I highly recommend his book "Enochian Vision Magick". He has a captivating way of telling their story and clearly explains how to use the system (including parts the Golden Dawn left out while incorporating it into their system.) Really good read

I'm just wrapping up a graduate course on Western Traditions and found your podcasts. These are great. I really love how you tie the history into it, which is why I started listening. I noticed you've been away for a few months. I hope you come back. I'm still listening to your podcasts, but have you talked about the Great Chain of Being yet? Also would love to hear about magic and science, medicine, astronomy, astrology, and so on. Thanks again. You guys are easy on the ears.
